About 2 hours and 45 minutes north of Detroit there is a small lake side city called Oscoda. In the fall, many of the shops and stores are closed for the season but I am sure it’s a busy place in summer time!
It’s right on Lake Huron and there are tons of rental resorts, motels, and camping areas! On the drive up, you’ll pass thru Pinnconning which is famous for it’s cheese. We happened to stop by a cheese store to stock up.
Another city you’ll drive thru is Tawas City. It’s a bit more populated, and has a lot of restaurants and shops. If you want a great burger stop by the Boathouse!
There isn’t a lot to do in Oscoda in the fall. Most of the places are closed, the beaches are chilly but it’s nice and quiet for sure.
There is a scenic drive that takes you to a nice outlook in the Huron National Forest. Its amazing!
If you visit this and decide to hike down to the Rifle river, you better be in fairly good shape, it’s a big climb in sand back to the top!
The sunrise is amazing, and the Huron House is a nice place to stay if you decide you want to check it out. It’s a little pricey for a room, but it’s a lot nicer than the usual road side hotel.
